Have you looked at your roof lately? Is there moss, leaves and residue build up? You’ve probably thought about paying someone to clean your roof, but then thought it would be too expensive. So then you thought about cleaning it yourself, but just haven’t gotten around to it. However, a startling fact that you might not be aware of in the United States is that your home insurance could be cancelled if you neglect to have it cleaned. Might sound outrageous, but it is happening!
An NBC news cast discussed in their segment “Don’t Waste Your Money” how insurance companies in the United States have been sending letters to homeowners warning them that if they don’t get their roof cleaned, their policies will be terminated.
One homeowner received a letter stating that “a build-up of mold and algae staining the roof and vinyl siding of the home will cause damage to the asphalt shingles”.
If you’re like most homeowners there are so many things to think about other than a dirty roof and it tends to go unnoticed. We don’t blame you; it’s high, can’t accurately be assessed at ground level and is simply ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Unfortunately, most people find out that their roof needs cleaned when the damage has already been done and a leak appears. However, even if your roof isn’t leaking, insurance companies are still threatening cancellation.
The video points out the cost of a new roof compared to a roof cleaning, stating that a new roof is anywhere from “$5000-$10,000” whereas a roof cleaning is around “$500.” The bottom line is insurers simply don’t want to pay for a new roof.
The video concludes by saying “There are many websites with suggestions for cleaning your roof yourself and yes you can, but there are two cautions: one, standing on a steep roof is a serious safety risk and two, if you blast your roof with a garden hose or pressure washer you can seriously damage the roofing shingles. So be careful and don’t waste your money!”
If you haven’t seen this video yet and you live in the US, you should watch it now. Even if you don’t live in the US, having your roof cleaned is still important and much less costly than replacing your entire roof.
